Catraia Fountain
Séc. XXI
Decorative fountain, inaugurated in December 2010.
The Fountain is a tribute to the Atlantic fishing vessel of the fishing community of the municipality of Esposende. Catraia is a traditional open fishing boat, with keel and sternpost, framed with prow and stern, and with a round and symmetrical hull and lateen sail. It stands as a legacy of the 16th-century Iberian Atlantic shipbuilding tradition, which formed the basis for the Portuguese caravel of the Portuguese Maritime Discoveries.
It survived in the craftsmanship of wooden shipbuilding in the fishing communities of Esposende. The last Catraia fished in the fishing port of Esposende until 1958.
