Chapel of Sr. dos Aflitos
Séc. XVI / Séc. XIX
The origin of the devotion dates back to the 16th century.
Before being a chapel it was a simple cross of painted stone with the image of crucified Christ, commissioned by fishermen and seafarers as an evocation of the dangerous afflictions of life at sea.
According to tradition, the Lord was invoked at the Hill on the early Ribeira Street as Senhor do Outeiro (Lord of the Hills), then Senhor dos Aflitos (Lord of the Afflicted).
With the urban change in the waterside area, this cross lost its usefulness as a maritime landmark. In 1880 it is transferred to the current location and a chapel is constructed to protect it. The restoration works of this chapel in 1969 only maintained the main façade and the cross of Senhor dos Aflitos.
