Pelourinho

Séc. XVII / Séc. XVIII

Symbol of municipal justice. Here offenders were publicly punished.
Later on, it became a place where judicial edicts and municipal edicts were put up. With the advent of the Republic in 1910, the Pillory, quite ruined and no longer with its function of symbolising royal power, was dismantled, and only rebuilt between 1925 and 1929.
It was then placed in the new town's entrance, to the south, in Santana or "Santa Ana" Square, where today it can be found. As a result, the square became the Pelourinho Square thereafter.
Property of Public Interest.
