Temenos
Séc. XX / 1997
Authors: John Fisher and Barney O'Hara
Raw material: Carrara marble
This piece was made in 1996 and was part of the works that were part of the international exhibition ARTE NA CIDADE, in 1997, in Esposende, being the real ex-libris of this event. It was acquired by the City Council.
It is inserted in the lines of the classical figurative, being a monumental piece in Carrara marble, with eleven tons, with the same origin of Michelangelo's famous sculpture, David, the world's largest emblem of the arts. Temenos is the Greek term for the expression "sacred garden", a concept associated with contemplation in the imaginary of Classical Antiquity. Being composed of three units, it represents, in the female figure, the water (the sea), the night, intuition and the subconscious and, in the male figure, the praising of fire, of the day, action and consciousness. The upper stone, on the other hand, symbolizes the air, the ground, and the earth.
