The howl of the wolf speaks the language of legends — almost all of them born from darkness and ignorance. Much of what we think we know about the wolf appears in the uncertain light of myths and superstitions. Thus, the stories repeated across all wolf territories about animals that trot for kilometres beside lost travellers, to test their courage and to confirm whether they can attack, may well be taken as true; as well as those of bold males entering pens to snatch lambs from the shepherd’s hands.

But its howl also tells other stories — ones that describe a noble animal, loyal to its loved ones. Of individuals who spend the night crying in sorrow at the place where their companion was killed. And of males who leap over pen walls to retrieve the pelt, hung out to dry, of their slain she-wolf. No one hears these howls in quite the same way.
