OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION “SEAFARERS OF ESPOSENDE: HEADING OUT INTO THE WORLD”
The Museu Marítimo de Esposende presents a new exhibition that represents one of the most significant milestones in its mission to promote and enhance the local maritime heritage, the result of 14 years of continuous work. Recently distinguished by the CCDR-Norte as a “Territory Museum,” the institution further strengthens its role as a guardian of Esposende’s memory and identity.
The city of Esposende, founded on 19 August 1572, is deeply connected to the courage and tradition of its seafarers. Over 454 years of history, men from the municipality carried the name of their homeland across the world, taking part in voyages and maritime routes that reached India, the African coast, the Americas, Europe, the Mediterranean, and even Greenland.
Commanders, captains, pilots, masters, boatswains, and sailors gave shape to this maritime epic, contributing decisively to Esposende’s historical prominence as a land of strong nautical tradition.
This exhibition pays tribute to all these men of the sea and seeks to highlight the importance of the municipality as a territory deeply marked by maritime culture.
The exhibition will be open to the public from 21 July 2026 at the Museu Marítimo de Esposende, managed by the Forum Esposendense Association, inviting visitors to discover or rediscover the historical and cultural richness of its people and territory.
